See http://www.chicon.org/artshow/ for full details. Art Show Docent Tours * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * John Hertz We've borrowed the term "docents" from museum talk, where it's used to distinguish perceptive folk who are good at leading people around the paintings and sculpture, pointing out things worth noticing. Our docents will be pro artists and fan writers who, as Kelly Freas once put it, "can say what they see". If you're fairly new to the sci-fi scene, or to sfnal art, try a tour. Final schedule will be posted in the Art Show and printed in the daily newsletter. A small sampling of our stellar docents includes Bob Eggleton, Alexis Gilliland, John Hertz, Jack Krolak, Mark Ferrari, and Mel. White. Bob Eggleton--The Live Exhibit * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hyatt Regency - Fishbowl, East Tower. Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am to 6:45 pm. Bob Eggleton, our Artist Guest of Honor, will be giving a live exhibition in the "Fishbowl" (looks like an office with glass walls, near the Hyatt Business Center), located just down the escalators from the first floor reflecting pool area. He will be painting, demonstrating his techniques, and being generally available to answer your questions throughout the exhibit. Wander by and tell him how much you love his work. Autograph Sessions * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Autograph sessions will be held in the Fan Concourse, between 10:00 am and 6:45 pm. See day-by-day schedules online or in your pocket program for precise times, and be sure to check the daily newsletter for late-breaking updates. Blood Drive: Calling All Fanpires! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Mike Sheffield, blood@chicon.org The Chicon blood drive will take place on Friday 01-Sep-2000 from noon until 6 p.m. in the Wrigley Room of the Hyatt. Whether you are a first timer or have given so many times you've had a spigot surgically grafted to your arm, we hope you will make time in your day to come by and give. You could be saving a life. The folks from Europacon are planning to host a thank you party especially for all of our blood donors on Saturday the 2nd. We will have a sign up sheet available starting on Thursday the 31st. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at: blood@chicon.org. Snail mail: Mike Sheffield 4572 Keever Ave. Long Beach, CA 90807-1819 Thank you in advance for your support, and we'll see you at the Con. Con Suite * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Joan Palfi Hyatt Regency - Mrs. O'Leary's (upstairs in West Tower). Thursday through Sunday, Noon to 5:00 am; Monday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Dead Dawg to follow. Some rules to remember: 1. Smoking is not permitted in Mrs. O'Leary's or in the hallways around Mrs. O'Leary's. Got that? Good! 2. Drugs - you know the spiel. Leave the recreational stuff at home. I do not want Chicago's Finest busting up one of my parties. 3. The Con Suite is not in the business of looking after your children. If they want to be Good Scouts and help pick up for a half hour or so, that's all to the good, but if it's 10:30 pm, and they don't know where their parents are, they will be considered lost children. I thoroughly hate that idea. Kids, keep track of your parents. 4. Don't leave anything unwatched. With any gathering this big, there is bound to be one unsocialized Badly Evolved Micro-Brain, who considers what's yours is its. Now for the good stuff. There will be soda, the usual munchies, and some unusual ones as well. We Will be celebrating something each evening (for example, Lon Chaney's Birthday Party - see door for final schedule). Chicago is doing some celebrating as well: the Tall Ships will be at the Navy Pier, the Jazz Festival will be in Grant Park. The Jerry Lewis Telethon, Chicago Edition will be in the Hotel. Masquerade * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Nancy Mildebrandt, masq@chicon.org Fairmont Hotel - Imperial Ballroom, Lower Level. [New 17-Aug-2000] Sunday, September 3, 8:30 pm to ??? Handicapped seating begins 7:30 pm. Master of Ceremonies - Greg Rihn. The Masquerade, a WorldCon feature since DisCon 1 in 1963, is one of the top five events of any WorldCon. Costumers from literally around the world come to present their craft. Themes range from the ridiculous to the sublime, from drama to high camp. The costume may be a solo entry or a group endeavor (group costumes have become increasingly common in recent years). A costume might have been thrown together for next to nothing, like one winner at last year's NASFiC , "I Have No Mouse and I Must Scream", put together at the con from Harlan Ellison's freebie mouse pads; it may have cost hundreds of dollars to make and been years in construction. However the costumes were made or are presented, though, the Chicon 2000 Masquerade will be an extravaganza not to be missed. Weapons Policy * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Any sharpened blade over 3 inches in length is a weapon in Chicago and is illegal to carry about one's person. What this means in practical terms is, if you whip out your steel in the wrong situation, the cops may feel themselves fully justified in arresting you for weapons violations. Keep 'em in your scabbards, boys and girls. Those of you fond of gunpowder should also be advised that all handguns are illegal in Chicago, barring special amnesty, and so is carrying them concealed. The city has nothing to say about "toy" weapons. On the other hand, if your super-realistic blaster attracts the attention of Mayor Daley's interest, the experience may not be a pleasant one. Remaining Deadlines * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Art Show has space left. * Dealers Room is full. 18-Aug-2000 Deadline for receipt of Mail-in Site Selection Ballots is 18-Aug-2000. 28-Aug-2000 Art Show entry deadline is now 28-Aug-2000, which is the Monday before the convention.
