Hyatt Regency - Water Tower Room, West Tower. Chicon 2000 will offer that increasingly popular convention perk, an Internet Lounge. Free access to the internet (via web, telnet, and ethernet for laptop users) will be available throughout the con. This is the place to go to check the Chicon 2000 on-site website for developing information and to explore information on many Chicago attractions. No need to miss emails just because you're at a convention. You could even show that neat website to a new friend who shares your interests. Two things that will not be available here are computer games (Doom aficionados, seek elsewhere) and free babysitting. Unattended children causing fuss or ruckus who cannot produce a parent on request will be treated as lost. Volunteers * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * vols@chicon.org Chicon 2000 is Looking for a few Great Gofers Drop us a line through the Chicon 2000 Website, or stop by at the Con. We'll be located in the Skyway Suites in the Hyatt, or follow the signs from Registration. We will need people on Tuesday afternoon (29-Aug-2000) and all day Wednesday (30-Aug-2000) for moving things around and getting the convention space ready for business. As well as on Tuesday afternoon (05-Sep-2000) for moving things out of the hotel and returning the space back to the Hyatt. We'll also need people all during the con as door guards, messengers, decorating for the dances, and all around general "go-fering." We do have limited crash space for our gofers, and as always the Gofer Lounge is always open to re-stoke your gofer engines. Volunteers who work 25 hours or more for Chicon will receive refunds of their membership fees, provided that the convention has sufficient leftover funds. (So it's important to make sure we have your correct mailing address on file.) Contact Katie Davis if you want to volunteer for pre-con duty. Thank you for volunteering, we always appreciate the ones who really make a convention run. And we know it can't be done with out your help. Please stop by to learn about fannish traditions, from fanzine feuds to fannish slang, or just to chat about fandom with like-minded folks. The Lounge will be open from approximately 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday - Sunday, Thursday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Monday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We're looking for volunteers! If you can talk intelligently (or at least amusingly) about fandom and can volunteer one (or more) two-hour shifts to help staff the Lounge, please stop by at the convention and sign up! It's a great place to meet people and chat. Fanzine editors: We plan to have fanzines on display and for sale. If you have fanzines you'd like to display, sell, give away, or donate to the Fan Fund auction, please write to fan.funds@chicon.org. Where's Thursday? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Leah Zeldes Smith, concourse@chicon.org Attention Thursday Night Irregulars: Thursday will be held at the usual time (8ish) in the Fan Lounge in Columbus Hall. Come and reminisce, help collate a retrospective Windyapa, and argue over whose turn it is to go out for more Coke. (If you show up too early, though, we'll make you vacuum.) For details on the special Chicon 2000 disty of Windyapa, contact Valli Hoski, Valli.Hoski@chicon.org Smoking * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Hyatt allows smoking in Knuckles Sports Bar and in the Big Bar on the hotel registration level but not in most other spaces. The Fairmont allows smoking in the B-1 area and just outside the lobby lounge area. The Swissotel allows smoking in the lobby and in the smoking areas of the restaurants. Unless otherwise specifically noted, all con-space is non-smoking. Do not assume that the presence of ash trays is a license to light up. Trays have been placed in no-smoking zones simply to protect the carpets from scofflaws. Many public areas in Chicago (such as the Metra Stations and trains, CTA stations, trains, and busses, and the Pedways) are also "No Smoking" zones. Gaming Highlights * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Beryl Turner, gaming@chicon.org This year, our gaming staff is going to try their very best to give you a sampling of some of the staples as well as a healthy helping of the new and different things that have come about in gaming recently. More importantly, our goal this year is to show that gaming, above all else, is also Science Fiction and Fantasy and the worlds in which we game are as deserving of credit and note as the universes created by the masters of the literary world. With that in mind, we are going to attempt to demonstrate this when and where ever we can during this, the Terminal Millennial World Science Fiction Convention. So, come and you can either play what we have to offer or bring your own games - we'll play them too. And remember, if you aren't having fun, re-read the rules, as you must be missing something! Gaming will be in the Swissotel. Talisman Madness... that's right. Everyone's favorite fantasy game of backstabbing, deviousness, and underhanded dealings is being featured at Chicon 2000 There will be four preliminary rounds using the standard board and the dungeon expansion. The first and second place winners from each round will go to a final round using... wait for it... four of the major expansion sets for the game (Dungeon, City, TimeScape, Dragon King). Chicon 2000 and the Chicagoland Gamer's CONclave formally invite you all to an Extinction Level Event, hosted by Dark Camelot. This is a Doctor Who/World of Darkness crossover LARP event. Bring your imagination and your wits to this one. Part one of this maxi-level event will begin on Friday Night and will end Monday in the wee hours of the morning. If a Malkavian found a Dalek whose gun couldn't shoot anymore, what would you ask it? We are hosting a Morrow Project Tournament at Chicon 2000. Players will assume the role of specialists who enter hibernation with the intention of surviving a nuclear war. However, fate takes a hand when the suspended members of the project find themselves awakened 150 years past the time that they were supposed to be revived and find themselves in a strange new world. This will be a multi-round event spanning the duration of the convention. Winners will play in a final round event. The Morrow Project... even in the future, some days, you just wish that you could just stay in bed... Zero hour is coming... Chicon 2000 and the Chicagoland Gamer's CONclave present the Chicago Millenial BattleTech Open tournament. This is a BattleTech Open tournament. We will be using standard FASA/MechForce rules for this event. This is a MechForce sanctioned event but anyone will be allowed to participate (MechForce members may count the event for points, not ranking). MurderThon 2000. We will be hosting a MurderThon event through the duration of the con. Players will be judged on number of kills, collateral victims, creative style and an award will be given for the most innovative kill in the game. Rules will be available at game time. If wholesale slaughter is your bent, then this is the game for you. If you are just showing up and wish to either run a game, play in one or just start a pickup game, make sure you stop and check our "WannaGame" board. These boards will be up around the Swissotel and at Gaming HQ. Just list the game you wish to run or check and see if someone is running a game you would like to play. Open gaming will be available from Con start to Con end and there will be rooms open 24 hours for open events. Anime * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Brent J. Warren, anime@chicon.org Swissotel, Lower Ballroom Level 3, Alpine Room. From the dust of the Mach 5, through the power of the reconfigurable veritechs of Robotech, "Anime" (Japanese Animation) has expanded and expounded within the U.S. It's most easily recognized by the non-afficionado because of the prevalence of cute, female characters with short skirts (or alternately skin tight spandex), outrageous, high tech mecha, oddly colored hair (blues, greens, neon reds) arranged in asymmetrical, geometric shapes and the ever present combat phrase (and pose, a necessity). Plot twists, unique things happening to characters (water based sex changes?), and the use of cute, fuzzy creatures make anime a true treat to behold. So look beyond tales of the electric mouse (Pikachu) and visit the Chicon 2000 Anime Rooms. There will be a limited edition, special program guide available at the convention, as well as some other neat surprises. Don't miss out! Anime Sponsors The 58th World Science Fiction Convention / Chicon 2000 Anime Room is being sponsored by MANGA Entertainment, a Chicago-based company that has become a household name in the anime community. Their best-known anime is Ghost In The Shell. MANGA will be showing the Special Edition DVD version of Ghost In The Shell in surround sound at the convention along with their other various titles. We are also being blessed with anime videos, discs, and series from Bandai, Urban Vision, Media Blasters, and AD Vision to name just a few. We would like to thank these companies for their support in making this year's Worldcon the best yet.
