Hugo Voting Update * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Michael Nelson, Hugo Administrator, hugos@chicon.org
At this point, I have received over 450 Hugo ballots. Since the
electronic ballot went online on July 12th, I have gotten 104 ballots
by e-mail. One of our webmasters, Erik V. Olson, was the first person
to cast an e-ballot (what a surprise).
Three paper ballots have been rejected because they had not been
signed. Two other paper ballots were rejected because the voters had
left all the identification lines blank and one person sent in an
empty envelope.
Some notes:
You do not need to include pages one and two of the ballot if you're
not buying a membership. Some people are copying all four pages and
mailing them. I'm just separating and throwing the first two pages
away if a membership hasn't been purchased.
You may enclose more than one ballot per envelope. Members of the same
household do not have to mail their ballots separately. I had a couple
send in their nominations forms in separate USPS Express Mail
envelopes! No, don't do that - send the money to me.
If you insist on waiting until the last minute (he snarled through
clinched teeth), I suggest you ask to have your envelope
hand-cancelled at your post office. Frankly, automatic postage
cancellation equipment sucks. I've gotten dozens of envelopes without
any cancellation marks.
Here's a suggestion. Cut out the Hugo Awards postal address from the
first page of the ballot and carefully tape it to your envelope as an
address label.
Some Comments from the Ballots:
"I didn't vote in all the categories."
"Too clueless to mark more than one!"
"Please consider adding an 'abstain' option for those of us who
simply have no familiarity with a category (e.g., fan artist)."
This is okay. Nobody is familiar with every nominee and category. Only
vote for the nominees you think should receive a 2000 Hugo Award for
work done in 1999. You don't need to rank every nominee in a category.
If you leave a category blank, we're able to figure out that you're
abstaining. We could add a "Abstain" line to each category, but it
would make the layout even more crowded. No need to cross out those
categories with angry red ink - unless it makes you feel better.
"Next year you should have the short fiction on the web."
I think our webmasters did a great job of providing links to the
nominees with material on the web. If you're a Chicon 2000 member, you
can go to Alexandra Digital Literature and
download most of the short fiction to read on your Palm Pilot or other
electronic devices for free. If people know of any better nominee
links, they should contact our webmasters.
"This person died recently, can I still vote for him?"
You may vote for a person who has passed on recently. Voting for a
Hugo Award should be based on the works a person created during the
previous year. For the 2000 Hugo Awards, you're voting on work done
during 1999. You have to ask yourself whether you feel this work
deserves a Hugo Award.
"I thought the selections in the novelette category were generally
weak."
"How in hell can you have _________________ on the list? It is
not SF!"
"Farscape should have been listed."
"Why wasn't Toy Story 2 on the ballot?"
Hey, I thought Mystery Men should have been on the ballot. Toy Story 2
came pretty close to getting on the ballot. I will be releasing a list
of the top twenty nominees in each category some time after the Hugo
Awards Ceremony. I had great fun keeping our chairman, Tom Veal,
informed on how close a couple of Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes
were to getting on the ballot. (Tom has many sterling qualities, but
he isn't a big Buffy fan. Which is okay, it got him to take the time
to submit his own nominations - something that most Worldcon chairs
haven't got time to do.)
Look at the numbers. Only 427 people bothered to make nominations -
less than ten percent of the members of Aussiecon Three and Chicon
2000 who were eligible to make nominations. In the Novelette category,
168 people nominated 130 different novelettes. This may shock you, but
some of those nominees have friends and those friends make nominations
based on that friendship.
I think it's more important to take the time to make nominations than
to vote. If something or someone you like isn't on the ballot, it's
because not enough people nominated them. As Chicon 2000 members, you
will have the right to make nominations for the 2001 Hugo Awards, even
if you don't have a Millennium Philcon membership. So if you don't
receive a 2001 Hugo nominating form by the end of January 2001,
contact the Millennium Philcon Hugo Administrator and tell him to send
a nomination form.
We do make a effort to contact all the nominees and request permission
to include them on the ballot. In the past, some people have said, "No,
this work doesn't belong in that category."
"Semiprozine is an idiotic category!"
"The Hugo Awards are so divorced from reality (especially in the
Fan categories) that in the future I may not bother to nominate
or vote."
Ah, this is where "No Award" may be used. In the past, "No Award" has
gotten the most votes in a particular category - a clear message that
the voters were not happy with that category or the available
nominees. There have been categories that have been eliminated because
not enough people were making nominations or voting for that category.
Chicon 2000 attending members are voting members of the World Science
Fiction Society. You have the right to attend the daily WSFS business
meetings that will be held during Chicon 2000 and make motions to
change the Hugo Awards and to vote on other motions presented for
consideration. Some people think the business meetings are the most
amusing part of a Worldcon - but they also enjoy discussing Robert's
Rules of Order, so we won't get into that.

standard introductions that traditionally happen at such events, the
Chicon Bid Committee will be fulfilling certain promises made to
certain pre-opposing members.
Guest of Honor Speeches * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Guest of Honor speeches will be on Friday, 01-Sep-2000, at 1:00PM.
Meet The Pros Party * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Chicon 2000 is proud to announce the Meet-the-Pros reception this year
will be a massive autograph party. With SFWA's support, Chicon 2000
will provide an opportunity for fans to get autographs from attending
authors, artists, editors, publishers, and agents in a party
atmosphere. All authors at Worldcon will be invited (whether or not
SFWA members). In addition in support of the literacy programs set up
by RWA (Romance Writers of America) with Laubach Literacy* SFWA has
extended a special invitation to members of RWA to attend Worldcon and
the Meet-the-Pros party. As an added attraction SFWA and RWA will be
raffling off packets that include autographed books and other gifts
provided by the authors. (Details on how to buy raffle tickets will be
posted to this website at a later date.) All proceeds to go to the
Laubach Literacy Programs.
A list of the pros who will be attending the party will be provided on
the Chicon 2000 website. At con, the most up-to-date list will be
available at registration, at the event itself, on the onsite web
server and in the dealers room (along with the names and locations of
the dealers who will have works by the authors, artists, editors and
publishers, available for purchase). Of course, there will still be
autograph sessions throughout the convention to catch up to anyone
you miss!
There will be refreshments available to help fans and pros keep up
their strength and energy to meet the demands of autographing and
tracking down everyone!
See you there.
*Laubach Literacy is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to
helping adults of all ages improve their lives and their communities
by learning reading, writing, math and problem solving skills. Anyone
wishing additional information on the Laubach Literacy Programs will
be able to get brochures at the Meet-the-Pros party (as well as speak
to a representative of the program), the freebie tables and at the
Laubach Literacy table located in the concourse area during the entire
convention.

4:00 PM.
Trivia Contest * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Leo Doroschenko
How well do you know your sf and fantasy? What do the endings of Fritz
Leiber's "Last," Lewis Padgett's "Compliments of the Author," and E.E.
"Doc" Smith's Galactic Patrol have in common? What story ends "If he
could only weep, he thought, but a robot could not weep?" What
swords-and-sorcery hero meets Elric in Karl Wagner's "The Gothic
Touch?" Who is John Wainwright?
If you know (or even if you don't) and would like to have some fun,
consider being a contestant or spectator at the Chicon Trivia Contest.
The contest will be in Jeopardy! format: 6 categories of 5 each, the
harder the question, the greater the point value. There will be no
penalties for incorrect answers. Categories include "Through Time and
Space with the Tree Stooges," "A Descent into the Mainstream (Part
2)," "My Kind of Town" (honoring our host city's contributions to the
genre, "Man and Superman," "True Names," "Skiffy Films of the 50's,"
"Politically Incorrect," "Weird Days," "More Questions Lovecraftian,"
"Classic Mars," "Gee, I Read That When I Was Just a Kid," and "Fritz
and Cats."
The object is to have fun, so expect a few totally off the wall
questions. All are welcome, fans and pros.

Beryl Turner, gaming@chicon.org
WANTED: GAME MASTERS or people willing to
monitor gaming events during the convention.
Due to an unforseen situation, Chicon's Gaming Track is in need of a
few extra GMs to help round out the gaming schedule.
In particular, we are looking for board game monitiors, familiar with
many of the current games out (The Settlers series, etc...) as well as
the classics (Talisman, Merchants of Venus, etc....).
Also we need people willing to GM RPG events. We want a large variety
of RPGs available, so the more you know, the better...however, if you
only know one game very well, that's fine too.
We are more than willing to work around your convention schedule, so
don't let that worry you. Let us know what you are willing to do and
we'll set it up.
If you are interested in lending a hand, contact us at
gaming@chicon.org and let us know.
